:: LifeHacks :: The People -Mrs. Hildegarde

When I was 10 years old, I had a lovely teacher – Mrs. Hildegarde.
She was very creative, had an interesting vision on education and was very passionate about teaching.

One day, she gave us an assignment. To write an essay with the -very common- titel:
“When I will be 30 …”
Oddly enough, I thought this one was great! I was super excited. And for one reason or another, I knew exactly where I would be when I would be 30. My essay was so specific, it really made an impression on her. She made me read it out load in front of the class room.

I still have my draft at home and every now and then, I re-read it. Just to see how I’m doing, if I’m still on track. Because believe it or not, my current life is very much in line with what I wrote when I was a little girl.

“When I will be 30 …
I will be General Manager of a hotel in Paris, I would be living in the suburbs in an amazing mansion with my loving husband and 5 kids. I would drive a very nice Mercedes, my hair would be red… ”

Ok, I’m not in Paris but New York seems to be a close call, I’m an assistant General Manager in a restaurant, my hair is actually red but I don’t have a car. That loving husband and 5 kids seemed to be wishful thinking as I am closer to the big 3 O than to the 20’s.
But you never know what will happen the next 4 years.

Every time I was a step closer to my goal, I would report to Mrs. Hildegarde. We kept in touch and still are.

Writing that article was I guess my first step into the happy life I’m living right now.
It was the first page of my personal journal, a quick glimpse of the beauty of life. And every time I’m one step closer to it, or when I discovered something new and exciting, I would track it back to the point where it was still a dream…
